Overview
The Understanding Islam course is a structured program designed for students seeking to build upon their foundational knowledge by engaging more deeply with the Islamic sciences. It aims to strengthen students’ understanding of Islamic discourse while equipping them with the knowledge and tools required to live a meaningful, principled, and productive life as Muslims.
Grounded in traditional scholarship and taught through authentic chains of learning traced back to the Prophet ﷺ, this course nurtures both intellectual clarity and spiritual growth.
Course Focus
Over the course of the program, students will study key disciplines of the Islamic sciences, developing a balanced understanding that combines jurisprudence, methodology, belief, and spiritual refinement.
The course places emphasis on:
- Sound understanding of fiqh and its application
- Awareness of the principles underpinning Islamic legal reasoning
- Development of character, discipline, and spiritual awareness
- Appreciation of the Islamic scholarly tradition and its continuity
Subjects Covered
Students will study a selection of core subjects, including:
- Fiqh (Ḥanafī): Practical rulings of worship and daily life
- Principles of Fiqh: Understanding how rulings are derived
- ʿAqīdah: Foundations of Islamic belief
- Uṣūl al-Ḥadīth: Introduction to the principles of ḥadīth sciences
- Ḥadīth: Study and explanation of selected narrations
- Tarbiyah: Spiritual development and refinement of character
Texts & Curriculum
The course draws from well-established classical works, including:
- Al-Muyassar (Ḥanafī Fiqh)
- Matn al-Ghāyah wa al-Taqrīb (Fiqh – Furber)
- Foundations of Belief (Imām al-Ghazālī)
- Introduction to Principles of Ḥadīth
- Explanation of 40 Aḥādīth
Instruction is delivered by qualified teachers with an emphasis on clarity, context, and practical relevance.
