Full Time Arabic & Islamic Sciences Program

The Daar Ibn Abbas Full-Time Arabic & Shariah Program is a comprehensive five-year program designed to cultivate knowledgeable, insightful and virtuous students of Islamic scholarship, equipped with the Arabic language, foundational Islamic sciences and the intellectual and spiritual tools necessary to carry the message of Islam with wisdom, clarity and understanding.

The program has been established with the aim of providing students in Australia with access to a serious, structured and traditional Islamic education, while maintaining a strong focus on the needs and circumstances of Muslims living in the Australian context.

Over the course of five years, students will progressively develop a high level of proficiency in Arabic and gain a broad and deep grounding in the major sciences of the Islamic tradition. The curriculum combines the memorisation, study, explanation and application of traditional scholarly texts, allowing students to build their knowledge systematically from foundational principles through to more advanced works.

Arabic is not merely one of the subjects taught in the program; Arabic is the primary medium of instruction. Students therefore develop their ability to read, understand, analyse and communicate in Arabic while simultaneously studying the Islamic sciences through the language in which the classical scholarly tradition was preserved.

Students will not simply be introduced to information about the Islamic sciences. Rather, they will be guided through the foundational texts of each discipline, learning the terminology, principles and frameworks upon which the sciences are built.

Where appropriate, students will be expected to memorise important texts and passages, understand their meanings, study their explanations and apply the principles they contain.

This method enables students to develop knowledge in a cumulative manner. Rather than approaching each subject as an isolated topic, students gradually build upon what they have previously studied, allowing their understanding to become increasingly comprehensive and interconnected.

The progression in Nahw takes students from foundational grammatical principles towards the detailed study of Arabic syntax and the advanced grammatical tradition. The well-established progression from al-Ajurrumiyyah through Qatr al-Nada and eventually the Alfiyyah reflects a traditional approach to developing grammatical competence.

Students study the structures and patterns of the Arabic language through texts such as:

Students study the life and example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through traditional works including:

The purpose of studying Mantiq is to develop clarity of thought, precision in reasoning and the ability to understand the logical structures employed throughout the scholarly tradition.

The five-year structure allows students sufficient time to develop their knowledge gradually and thoroughly.

Rather than attempting to cover the Islamic sciences in a short period, the program provides students with an extended period of consistent, intensive study.

Students will progress from foundational Arabic and Islamic knowledge towards increasingly advanced study, with the expectation that their ability to understand classical Arabic texts and engage with the Islamic sciences will develop significantly throughout the five years.

The program therefore places importance upon Tarbiyah, character, discipline, sincerity and spiritual development alongside academic study.

Students are encouraged to understand that knowledge carries responsibility. The objective is not merely to produce students who can read books, but students who seek to embody what they learn and who can communicate Islamic knowledge with wisdom, humility and good character.

The ultimate aim is to nurture graduates who are able to become beneficial contributors to their communities and to the wider Australian Muslim community — individuals who possess knowledge, insight, sound character and a strong connection to the Islamic scholarly tradition.

The program is intentionally structured as an intensive full-time course.

This provides students with approximately 30 hours of structured study each week, in addition to the personal revision, memorisation, reading and preparation required outside classroom hours.

The academic year consists of four terms, with each term averaging approximately 11 weeks, allowing for minor variations in term length where required by the annual calendar.

Across five years, students therefore have the opportunity to dedicate a substantial amount of time to their Arabic and Islamic education in a structured and consistent environment.

Through the study of Arabic, Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, 'Aqidah, Usul al-Fiqh, Tafsir, Sirah, Balaghah, Mantiq and the other Islamic sciences, students will build the foundations necessary for a lifetime of learning and service.
