Learn to Read & Memorisation – Tuesdays
Overview
The Learn to Read & Qurʾān Memorisation course is a structured program designed to support students at different stages of their Qurʾān journey, from learning how to read correctly to developing strong foundations in tajwīd and progressing into memorisation.
The course aims to assist students in improving their current level of Qurʾān recitation and memorisation through guided instruction, personalised pacing, and consistent teacher support. It is suitable for students who are beginning their Qurʾān studies as well as those seeking to strengthen their recitation skills before or alongside memorisation.
Course Structure
The program consists of three integrated streams, allowing students to progress according to their individual ability:
- Learn to Read
An introductory level designed for students learning to read the Qurʾān. This stream focuses on letter recognition, correct pronunciation, and basic reading skills. No prior experience is required. - Tajwīd
An introductory tajwīd stream for students who already possess basic reading proficiency. Students learn the theory and practical application of tajwīd rules while reciting the Qurʾān, developing accuracy and fluency. - Qurʾān Memorisation
Students memorise the Qurʾān at their own pace under the guidance of qualified teachers. Memorisation begins with Juzʾ 30 and Juzʾ 29, followed by selected sūrahs such as Yāsīn, al-Wāqiʿah, and al-Kahf, before progressing further. This stream assumes basic reading ability and familiarity with tajwīd rules.
Teaching Approach
Instruction is delivered in a supportive and structured environment, with close teacher guidance to ensure correct recitation, strong foundations, and sustainable memorisation. Students progress according to ability rather than age alone, allowing for steady and confident development.

- Day & Time: Tuesdays, 7:00pm – 9:00pm
- Target Age: 16+
- Course Duration: Ongoing
Due to Ramaḍān, Term 1 will consist of approximately three weeks before Ramaḍān and two weeks after. - Texts Used:

- Rules of Tajwīd (Madinah Script) – Learn to Read Series
- Fees: $20 per week
- Class Dates: 27/01, 03/02, 10/02, 24/03, 31/03
This course is ideal for students seeking a clear pathway from reading the Qurʾān confidently to reciting with tajwīd and progressing into memorisation under qualified instruction.
*If minimum registration numbers are not met, the class may be cancelled or merged with another class on a different day.
Shaykh Khazen Zaoud
Teacher
Khazen Zaoud began his journey of sacred knowledge by memorising the Qur’an in Australia under the guidance of Shaykh Abdul Moez & Shaykh Abdul Kareem Newman. In 2005, he travelled to Yemen where he studied for a year at a branch of Dar al-Mustafa. He then moved to Damascus, Syria, and pursued formal studies at Ma’had al-Fath al-Islami, graduating in 2011 with a focus on Arabic and the Sharia sciences, and receiving an ijazah in Qur’an.
Returning to Australia in 2012, he served as the Imam of Lakemba Musalla for several years and taught at Rissalah College in Lakemba. He now continues to teach and serve the community at Daar Ibn Abbas.
